Lime Tree + Silly Friends

There was an awesome deal at Newegg for a 2TB WD My Book that was on sale last week. I quickly logged on and punched in my credit card number that I have memorized by heart and within a few days my new data backup goodie showed up on the doorstep. I <3 UPS/Fedex! 3 years ago I took the plunge and purchased my lovely MBP after longing after it for some time. I never utilized the Time Machine aspect of the computer until now. I’ve been living in constant fear that my computer is going to crash and I’ll lose all my images so I’ve been refusing to delete them off of the memory card. I guess I finally spent enough money in memory cards and finally ponied up to buy an external HD to use as backup when my camera started telling me that I had memory to shoot 40 more images. Oops!

Doing the insanely long back up since I’ve never Time Machined before, I came across some old photos of when my friend Tiffany flew up from San Diego to visit. Some other fellow UCSD friends joined us on a food journey that started with the dry fried chicken wings at San Tung, followed immediately with a full lunch at Lime Tree and then the drive up to Napa to indulge in some EtOH. 😉 We hit up a handful of wineries starting with V.Sattui (which I think is over-rated!), Peju (AMAZING!), taking pictures of Opus One, hitting up a few more smaller wineries and wrapping up the day at Folie A Deux. I then drove the three happy buzzed people back to PA where we met up with more friends and had dinner at La Bodeguita del Medio.

It was a day filled with great food, lots of fun and plenty of good company. I wanted to blog about the amazing food we ate at Lime Tree; it was so good that we dug in before I remembered to pull out my camera to nab a few shots. I had to creatively angle the shots to cover up the bite marks/missing portions.

The roti prata was perfectly flakey, CHEAP very well priced!! and came with an excellent dipping sauce. The owner/chef, Ming, is awesome!

My go to dish. Every trip to Lime Tree for me includes a plate of the Curry Noodles. Usually I’ll order two more orders to go so I can slowly eat it throughout the week.

Everyone eyeing the crab… notice that the roti’s gone, curry dipping sauce is gone, fried rice is half eaten and we’ve divied up half of the curry noodles already. The star of the restaurant is the Singaporean Chili Crab. DELICIOUS!!

Mr. Crab in all of his fine glory!

Love this hole in the wall and always looking forward to hosting friends from out of town!

Mustard’s Grill

It’s Monday again… The weekend flew by too fast. Whenever it’s Monday, I always start thinking of all the places I’d rather be instead of restarting the countdown towards the next weekend.

Just cause I’ve been constantly thinking about the brown sugar meringue topping, I had to go and dig out the pictures of the meal Sam and I had at Mustard’s Grill in Yountville. Usually I’m a heavy steak and potatoes/Flintstone Era carnivore, but they do such a great vegetarian mushroom burger that I always veer towards it. Their onion strings are to die for, sliced perfectly thing and fried perfectly crisp. Their apple ketchup that is served with the onion strings are homemade; it has the perfect amount of tang to it.

Food Porn for you to drool over:

Sam’s dish:

Mustard’s Grill is one of my favorite restaurants up there in Napa for casual dining. I’m not a wine drinker, but I’ll always relish a drive up to Wine Country just to stuff my face and play with my camera. During tastings and waiting for our food to digest so I could start on my next meal, Sam took an off road and we drove up the hills so we could look down Napa Valley.

Salad!

I got a Chipotle salad for lunch today. Loaded up with lots of veggies and salsa… and steak! Ever since college I’ve rarely touched Chipotle, the only other time since 2005 was when they served us burritos for a company event. Not too shabby! The menu’s changed since the last time I was in. I was slightly annoyed with the person serving me since he kept rolling his eyes at me when I asked him for an extra scoop of salsa. Geez! It’s not coming out of your paycheck!! And I didn’t add two of the more expensive toppings – no cheese and no sour cream! Hmph!!! Overall it was a yummy salad. The dressing they gave was disgusting but I had enough flavor in my salad with plenty of corn salsa and pico de gallo. I was uber impressed with the quality of the steak… it was even cooked perfectly medium!

I snapped this with my ancient point and shoot today. I wonder if there’s a difference for blogging when its DSLR vs point and shoot…. Hm….

One Month Down… Forever Left To Go!

Sam and I celebrated our first monthaversary tonight. 1/11/11! Since I’ve been pretty domesticated the last few weeks, we went out to Sushi Tomi to feast at their sushi bar.

We had our usual… salmon sashimi/saba shioyaki combo, an order of amaebi sashimi, an order of uni, salmon skin roll, tarako onigiri, and we tried the gyutan yakitori. Yum!! :)

I love their version of salmon skin roll; no yucky sauces to mask any flavor and they put a fresh shiso leaf in there to add some zing!

Sushi Tomi has one of the freshest, creamiest uni sashimi in the Bay Area. It almost rivals Sushi Ota in SD… almost… Sam loves their amaebi and I love the fried amaebi heads.

I might seem nuts for ordering onigiri here, but they use a super fresh tarako and they serve it with super yummy pickles!

We love their sake sashimi. It’s buttery and fresh. Over the years I’ve grown extremely fond of salmon. Sadly, now I enjoy it raw a lot more than the cooked version.

We wrapped everything up with an order of the beef tongue skewers. Smoky and meaty. Love it!! It had a lot of texture to it. I loved it. I got to enjoy it much more than the braised version from Gochi.

No pictures of the saba since Sam started digging into it as soon as it was placed in front of him.

Happy 1 Month! 😀

Pixar and a Good Chinese Meal!

I heart Pixar. Of all of the movies they’ve made, my favorites are still Cars, Monsters Inc., and Wall-E. A few years ago for Christmas, Sam bought me two little Wall-E toys. It was also the same time I got my D300 and I had a lot of fun putting my Wall-E’s in funny poses.

After a quick detour, we made it up to Oakland in fairly good time. Sam’s car suffered a chip in his windshield and we realized why we hate driving on 880 – the road conditions are horrendous! We got up to the museum and found a looooong line. :( Sam dropped me off and I got in line while he found parking.

The museum didn’t impress me but the actual Pixar exhibit was adorable. It was fairly crowded but the images/sculptures/exhibits were endearing and beautiful. Afterward, we hit up a Chinese restaurant I found on my Yelp app.

We ordered the chive and pork dumplings (it came with their house special sauce)

Dumplings!!

Beef Chow Mein w/ Knife Cut Noodles:

And a yummy plate of vegetables… Full review on this plate can be found on my yelp site!

Registry Thoughts and Registry Bonus Gifts

I briefly mentioned the bonus gifts in my last post when blogging about the off sized All-Clad measuring spoons. Most stores such as Crate and Barrel, WS, and Macy’s offer incentive gifts through some of the brands they carry. I can’t figure out why, but I guess it is to entice brides to register for entire sets of knives/pans/utensils/items that looked amazing in the store but you end up not using and takes up a ton of space at home. Sam and I registered at two places, technically three. Our main registries were at Williams-Sonoma and our china was registered at Crate and Barrel. Since I worked at WS years ago and wracked up practically a whole kitchen’s worth of goodies there on my employee discount, there were a few things that were still lacking; aka I couldn’t afford it myself in the past.

One of the things I really really coveted and lusted after was the KitchenAid stand mixer. I didn’t do much baking since I hated the clean up and it was a hassle trying to get dough off the measly little beaters on my $20 hand mixer from Albertson’s that I rarely ever baked. When I did, I’d end up mixing everything by hand and hating myself even more. With that said, I didn’t start this odd obsession until I hung out with my friend Becky and she was making chocolate chip cookies. Everything went into her shiny red KitchenAid. Clean up was a breeze and we sat around chatting while the little KitchenAid mixed away! At the end, we scooped out the dough and popped everything in the oven and we were done! No sore arms, no gazillion dishes to wash, everything was so simple.

It dawned on me:

Baking w/out KitchenAid = measure out ingredients + dig out hand mixer + hand mixer not working + looking for the wooden spoon+ sore arms + tons of dishes + big mess + baking.

Baking w/ KitchenAid = measure out ingredients + baking. WOW.

This revelation dawned on me as I was packing up my condo in La Jolla to move so buying a stand mixer was probably not the best idea. So I kept telling myself… I’ll register for one for my wedding. That appeased me for the time being except I was boyfriend-less and the furthest away from getting married. Over the years, I was so tempted to buy it for myself but stuck to the fact that I was going to register for it. In the end, it made it so much sweeter to get the box in the mail at work knowing that my future in-laws had ordered it for me.

Totally going off track, there were only a few items that we wanted, certain appliances to update when we combined our households. I joke that Sam got a good deal out of me since I came with All-Clad, Shun Knife set, Emile Henry cookware, a professional Belgian Waffle maker, and all sorts of random stuff including two fish silicone spatulas and an ebelskiver pan. (Google ebelskiver or go to WS. I kid you not… I bought nearly EVERYTHING in that store.) And seriously… I’m sure you’re thinking “Spatula is a spatula!! There’s a difference!?”  Oh yeah did I mention I also had enough dinner and serving ware to seat and serve 8 at once?! This was the kitchen I stocked up with for COLLEGE. And no… I did not go to culinary school. Although in retrospect I think I would have had more fun going to culinary school.

When it came time to register, we picked out a few things, Le Creuset, a countertop convection oven/toaster (best thing EVER!!). In the end, we had a good collection of things and certain brands offered goodies for hitting certain dollar marks. All-Clad was one, and I sent in for a set of odd sized measuring cups. Le Creuset was another and they sent me a mini stoneware coquette. Totally adorable, it sits completely useless since it is so small on our countertop but it dawned on me to use it as a salt holder. It is probably one of the cutest most expensive salt holders out there.  I think the Le Creuset magnets get more usage out there than these little coquettes… I guess I can use it to serve a sauce in but it would be too much of a hassle to clean and wash out. Salt holder it is!

With that said, if you’re ever registering, look around and see if there are any goodies out there… Sometimes these stores offer incentive gifts for you to stock up on – and the gifts range from awesome to adorable but useless. Cause I mean… I use my 1 1/2 c. measuring up all the time!! Yeah… totally.

Just Because Flowers. :)

I love tulips and daffodils. They just seem so bright and cheery. When we first lived in Seattle, we’d drive up to Skagit Valley to enoy the annual Tulip Festival. I came back home earlier this week and saw these on the dining room table.

Thanks Hubsters!! :) Love the flowers! 😀

The candle holders next to the tulips were a wedding gift from our neighbor Carol. I mentioned to her a few weeks ago that we were getting hitched and she remembered the date. The Friday morning before our wedding, I found a lovely package on our doorstep wrapped up with congratulatory card. It was really sweet of her to remember.

Peppermint Bark Fudge Chocolate Cookies!

I was browsing around looking for other ideas of using Peppermint Bark since we have quite a bit leftover. I was probably on crack when I got on a craving and bought a stash from Williams Sonoma. I LOVE Williams Sonoma… I probably gained 5 pounds just from working there on the weekends over the holidays. They used to have it out in the break room and every excuse I had I’d be stuffing my face with the goodies they had back there.

Thanks to Google I found another website where I found another use for Peppermint Bark. Thank you Kristy from Sweet Treats and More! I’ll just show you the basic ingredients and since I totally hijacked her recipe, you’ll have to go to her site to find the directions!! EDIT: Per her email she told me I could repost the recipe here.

They taste like the amazing mint hot chocolate that Williams Sonoma sells but wrapped up in cookie form! I fiddled with the recipe a bit by cutting down on the flour since her blog said that they came out quite a bit fudgy and I wanted a drier cookie. Also lengthened the bake time. They were gooey when hot but cooled down to a lovely chewy chocolate cookie. I love chocolate and mint so I cut down on the amount of peppermint bark (also since I kept eating it as I was chopping it!) and added an additional half cup of crushed candy canes. It was the perfect cookie to make to use up leftover holiday treats!

Peppermint Bark Fudge Chocolate Cookies (adapted from Sweet Treats and More)
Preheat the oven to 350. Cream the butter and sugars together. If butter is straight out of the fridge, beat the butter until softened (our house is perpetually an Igloo so our butter refuses to “soften” when I leave it out). While the butter and sugars are creaming, mix the flour, baking soda, and pudding mix together. Beat in eggs and vanilla, slowly add in the dry ingredients. At the end mix in the chopped bark and chopped candy canes. I don’t have a cookie scoop but I used a large Asian soup spoon and did a quick roll of the dough in my hands to make them about 1.5″ round. Bake at 350 for 9 minutes. Remove from oven and let them cool down before eating!

Since I’m still bathing in all the goodies from the wedding. Jenn, thank you so much for the shower gift nesting bowls! I love them and use them all the time. They make my food prep photography look so respectable instead me haphazardly throwing stuff in our rice bowls. Mom H./Dad H./Mae H., LOVE the stand mixer you guys gave me for a shower gift. It is amazing and I’ve been happily baking with it throughout the holiday season. It has made baking a complete breeze… no more hand held mixers for me – I can finally multitask!!! I  have the KitchenAid that I’ve been lusting after for years!! Oh yeah… and I finally got to use my odd sized All-Clad measuring cups! WS has these great vendor gifts so that when you register for X Dollar amount of things, certain brands will send you goodies. Since we registered for a few pieces of All-Clad, we met the minimums for All-Clad and they sent me the odd sized measuring cups. Goes perfectly with my normal sized ones and the measuring spoons I already have! I love how they are made to look like mini versions of the pots I cook in! (Will do a separate post about our registry.)

I didn’t have parchment paper but Mommy L. bought this amazing oven paper back from Japan which is essentially parchment paper covered in a thin layer of silicon. AMAZING stuff! I used that and the cookies slid right off. Beautiful! :) Very happy with the results… It was like a cross between a Silpat and parchment, I guess it’s like a disposable version of Silpats!

Post Holidays and I’m still fattening everyone up! 😉

Hello Mr. Praying Mantis!

What beady eyes you have…

Breaking in the Le Creuset!

I have to say, we got a ton of really nice gifts from our wedding. One of my favorite items was that I finally got a few Le Creuset pieces that I love. Thank you so much Aunt Patricia!!! I broke in my Le Creuset this weekend by cooking up a Beef Bourguignon/Pot Roast dish. We still had a lovely Chianti left over from our rehearsal dinner. I deglazed the pan with it and it was extremely nostalgic… thinking of the lovely dinner my now in-laws hosted for us.

I was too lazy to chop up the meat so I threw it in a la pot roast style but used the ingredients of a beef bourguignon. Here’s the end result with the lid off. My camera didn’t do a good job of capturing the picture through all the steam coming off. I have to say… I LOVE the pot… I seared it first in my All-Clad and then transferred everything in to the Le Creuset. The lid is so heavy that there was no steam coming off and it caught all the liquid and it self basted throughout the night. We had our groomsman Ben over for dinner and finished nearly everything off. The mushrooms were delicious! Recipe over here!
